T.I.N.A. and other thoughts
I have never tried to "de-google" my life, cause I never googlified to any considerable extend. When Chrome came about, in like 2007 or 8, I never jumped ship from Firefox, when Gmail came about (2004? maybe), I couldn't get an invite so never moved. I used to love Google search, but that was pretty much the extend of my usage of the Google ecosystem.
However, I was mindful of Google's following the "Embrace, extend and extinguish" strategy. I needed a good email service, and came across to Protonmail at around 2015 or so. I cannot remember if they used to offer a free service back then, but I was happy to pay for an essential, for me, service that is reliable and privacy-friendly.
Fast-forward to 2025, this happened:

and, shortly after, this:

(I'd embed the tweets and the screenshots, but I am too lazy for this, just click the links).
The posts from Protonmail's official Mastodon account stayed up for a bit less than a day and then got deleted. The original tweet from Protonmail's C.E.O. Andy Yen is still up, as of the time of this writing: https://x.com/andyyen/status/1864436449942110660
It basically says that USA's Republicans (yes, the pro-"life", anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrants, genocide supporting, homophobic, transphobic fascists) are most likely to "stand up for the little guy" in terms of combating Big Tech abuse. The Mastodon follow up was that USA's Democrats are now ruled by corporate neoliberals, unlike the Republicans.
And, thus, we come to the T.I.N.A. ("there is no alternative") title of the post. Should I keep using Protonmail, especially since the service is flawless and I have already paid my 2025 subscription? Am I ok with my subscription contributing to the payroll of right-wingers? Should I move all my emails and aliases and custom domain emails to a different service? And all my photos, that only a couple of months ago I decided to save into the cloud for first time ever? Which service? Tutanota? Who is to say they won't come and say something similar tomorrow?
And this is today's big question, dear readers (<- read in Bridgerton accent). (I'm probably cancelling my subscription soon)
